In late May 1940, hundreds of thousands of British and French soldiers found themselves cut off and surrounded by all-conquering German forces near the port city of Dunkirk . Over the previous fortnight they had fought tooth and nail to hold back the German tide, but now, exhausted and under constant aerial and artillery bombardment, their only chance of escaping annihilation lay in evacuation to Britain.
