I had one conversation with my brother prior to handing him my business and this is it. I’ve always strongly believed in the principles from books like “The 4 Hour Work Week” by Tim Ferriss and “Anything You Want” by Derek Sivers. But how can you say you believe anything if your actions don’t support your words? Most people confuse Leadership with Management. Leadership is giving responsibility to people so they can grow while management is taking it away, often unnecessarily for your own ego. I believe that if you’re a truly great leader you don’t need to micromanage and the people you choose can lead themselves if the environment is right. This conversation was before I started travelling and we’ve barely spoken since. I’ve left him at it. By all metrics the business is in a better position than when I left and Brendan has purchased numerous new pieces of equipment. I don’t like the “hustle” or “grind” culture espoused today, I think 99% of it is fake and ego driven. Of course I worked hard and made some good decisions to build my business but I’m not special, loads of others work just as hard as me.
