Limbo - A Poem by Sr. Mary Ada (Christ’s Decent into Hell)

The Latin Prayer Podcast · 2023-04-08

A beautiful poem by Sr. Mary Ada about Christ's decent into Hell as He is met by St. Joseph.

The ancient greyness shiftedSuddenly and thinnedLike mist upon the moorsBefore a wind.An old, old prophet liftedA shining face and said :"He will be coming soon. The Son of God is dead;He died this afternoon."

A murmurous excitement stirredAll souls. They wondered if they dreamed ---Save one old man who seemedNot even to have heard.

And Moses standing,Hushed them all to askIf any had a welcome song prepared. If not, would David take the task? And if they caredCould not the three young children singThe Benedicite, the canticle of praiseThey made when God kept them from perishingIn the fiery blaze?

A breath of spring surprised them,Stilling Moses' words. No one could speak, rememberingThe first fresh flowers,The little singing birds.Still others thought of fields new ploughedOr apple treesAll blossom-boughed.Or some, the way a dried bed fillsWith waterLaughing down green hills. The fisherfolk dreamed of the foamOn bright blue seas. The one old man who had not stirredRemembered home.

And there He wasSplendid as the morning sun and fairAs only God is fair. And they, confused with joy,Knelt to adoreSeeing that he woreFive crimson starsHe never had before.

No canticle at all was sung.None toned a psalm, or raised a greeting song.A silent man aloneOf all that throngFound tongue ----Not any other.Close to His heartWhen the embrace was done,Old Joseph said,"How is Your Mother,How is Your Mother, Son?"

The Latin Prayer Podcast

We are living in difficult times, both in the Church and in the world. Now more than ever, ordinary Catholics must fight for the salvation of souls and personal sanctity. Latin is the universal language of the Church, made holy when it was nailed to the Cross with Christ (John 19:19–20). It connects us to the worship of Heaven and strengthens our prayers.

In 2017, I wanted to pray the Rosary in Latin but couldn’t find a podcast to follow. So I made one. It has since grown into a full library of Rosaries, Litanies, Chaplets, and other traditional prayers. I’ve also created Latin learning guides and printable resources, available through Patreon, to help you pray with clarity and confidence, whether on your own or with your family.

This is about restoring Catholic prayer, reclaiming sacred tradition, and forming a movement of families praying daily in Latin for the salvation of souls and the renewal of Holy Mother Church.
